Matthew B. Caffrey Jr.

Author of “On Wargaming” how wargames have shaped the past and can shape the future”, (2019). Co-authored the Gulf War Fact Book, and has written extensively on wargaming, airpower, and defense issues. 

  • Leads wargames for the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio and teaches wargaming for the Air Force Material Command (AFMC). Created the ACSC Wargame Elective, the AFRL Wargame Course and the AFMC Wargame Course.  Former AFRL Wargame Liaison to AFMC; Lead Future Warfare Analysis Team, Directorate of Plans and Programs, HQ AFRL.

  • Founder of Connections interdisciplinary wargame conference (1993-2020) and helped found Connections UK (2013-2020). 

  • Former Professor of Wargaming and Campaign Planning at the Air Command and Staff College (ACSC) providing expert advice to the German War College, United Kingdom’s Royal Air Force and Defense Research Establishment, Pentagon and Silicon Valley. 

  • Extensively involved in Department of Defense Wargames 

    • Participant in many Air Force, Navy and Army Title 10 Wargames.  

    • Instructor at Air Force Wargaming Institute (Air University, Maxwell AFB, Alabama).  

    • Designer of Agile Combat support wargames for US and allied forces

    • Developer of the 3rd Generation Wargame concept.
